Step 01

Reserve your company name

Search the Companies Registry online to confirm your preferred name is available. You can reserve it for a fee before filing. Names must not conflict with existing registrations.

Tips

  • Check spelling variations — similar names can be rejected
  • Avoid names that imply government affiliation (e.g. "National", "Trinidad")
  • Limited Company names must end in "Limited" or "Ltd"
Step 02

File for Certificate of Incorporation

Submit your incorporation application to the Companies Registry of Trinidad and Tobago. You will need to file Articles of Incorporation and a Notice of Directors. This can be done in person or via an approved agent.

Tips

  • Use a registered agent or attorney to reduce filing errors
  • Memorandum of Association is required for older-style registrations
  • Expedited processing may be available for an additional fee
Step 03

Register with the Board of Inland Revenue (BIR)

Once incorporated, register your company with the BIR to obtain your Business Registration Number (BRN). This is required to pay business taxes and to invoice clients legally.

No government fee2–5 business days (in-person)

Tips

  • Bring your Certificate of Incorporation and director IDs
  • You will receive a BIR registration number on the spot or by post
  • Register at the BIR office in Port of Spain or regional branches
Step 04

Register with the National Insurance Board (NIB)

If you have employees (including yourself as a working director), you must register with the National Insurance Board. Contributions are mandatory for all employees.

Tips

  • Required if you pay yourself a salary through the company
  • Contribution rates: 13.2% employer + 6.6% employee (2024 rates)
  • Register at any NIB office or online via the NIB portal
